The color is dark and goes right to the edge of the glass. Violet highlights give just a hint of purple to an otherwise deep ruby color.

The nose has a ton of things going on. Spicy cedar, black cherry, earthy blackberries and cherries, a bit of anise… You could throw a dart at a cookbook and/or a spice rack and hit something in this wine.

Once you get the wine away from your nostrils, it gives great mouth. I've always believed that good wine shouldn't just smell and taste great, but should feel good as well. That's often hard for a young wine to do, but this 2000 is soft and creamy while still showing plenty of acidity. The flavors from the nose come through, as does a touch of cranberry from the acidity.

A glowing review, eh? Still, I have to slam Signor Coppola for one thing: adding to the wine world's confusion. Syrah traditionally comes in bottles with sloping shoulders, but Frank has shoved this beauty into a tall-shouldered bottle. What's with that? Well, if you're looking for this wine, at least it will stand out on the shelf amongst its sloped-shouldered brethren.

Cheers,
TSW

Read the WoW Rant on syarh, shiraz and petite sirah, originally sent to subscribers 10/24/01.

The world of wine is all-too-often guilty of being all-too-confusing, and syrah is one of the worst offenders. First, syrah hails from France's Rhone region (Rhone is French for "unpronounceable wineries and valleys"). Second, there's petite sirah, which isn't syrah but sounds like it would be (even more so when wineries label it as "Petite Syrah"). Third -- what's with Shiraz…?

Fear not, as WoW is here to stop the insanity faster than a dyed, crew cut-wearing exercise freak. Click here to see our little write up on syrah, shiraz, petite sirah and the differences (or not) between them.

Also cutting through the chaos is this week's Wine of the Week. It's a wine you can count on being good, and should have little problem finding. Coppola's Diamond Series has come through again with another winner. Following its great '99 syrah, the 2000 is a solid buy, too! (We also liked the '99 Diamond Series Claret.)
